The 1992 Boston MA Tall Ships. Charlestown Navy Yard The Tall Ships sailed into Boston Harbor in July, 1992, to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America. Boston is home to the most famous tall ship in the United States, the USS Constitution, also known as Old Ironsides, the Constitution is the oldest commissioned warship in the world still afloat. Ordered by President George Washington, the 44-gun frigate has gone to battle 33 times against the French, the British, and pirates of the Barbary Coast. She delivered troops to what is now Vietnam after the War of 1812, and later patrolled the African coast to fight the slave trade. This was a great event I was lucky to be a part of back in 1992. Polaroid sponsored the Tall Ships event and the Amerigo Vespuci Tall Ship. It was breathtaking. I was able to attend two days of the event capturing everything I could from on the Constitution as it sailed out into the Charles River and returned to dry dock for a historic restoration. The CEO of Polaroid was Mac Booth at the time and the Commander of the Constitution then was Commander Richard B. Amirault who was really a good sport having me tag around on his coat tails almost. The first day I shot from the Park Rangers building in the heat but the best view for the parade of tall ships. The second day I went aboard the Constitution a memory I will always treasure. Enjoy the photos. Photography by Sophia Yates not my real name lol
